Bill Mullins, 62, of Salem, died Thursday, June 20, 2019 after a prolonged illness. He now rests in the Glory of Christ Jesus his Savior. Born on October 19, 1956, he was the only child of William M. Mullins, Jr. and Dorothy J. Mullins.

Bill was a 1976 graduate of Patrick Henry High School in Roanoke, VA. He subsequently attended Blue Ridge Community College where he further realized what would be a life-long devotion to being outside. Whether with hoe or tractor, he was most happy when “playing in the dirt.” After many years owning his own business, he went to work at Cardinal Valley Industrial Supply where he served as General Manager until his illness began.

In the off-seasons, Bill loved chasing grouse alongside a good bird dog (Rover deserves a mention here), or peering over a deer stand along the James River. In his later years he was most intent on serving Jesus Christ, striving to submit his own self-acknowledged strong will to that of his Lord.

He is preceded in death by his grandparents, Murph and Lera Mullins; and Glenn and Elizabeth Johnson. Also preceding him are his parents, William M. Mullins Jr., and Dorothy J. Mullins.

He is survived by his beloved wife of 41 years, Rebecca B. Mullins. Also surviving him is his only son, William M. Mullins IV, and his wife Jennifer D. Mullins. His first grandchild, Davis Murphy Mullins is expected in September. He also developed quite an affinity for his Mother In-Law, Josephine K. Bralley; she also survives him and carries on the landscaping tradition.

The family will receive friends from 6:00 to 8:00 PM, Sunday, June 23, 2019 at John M. Oakey and Son Funeral Home in Salem. His funeral service will be held at 1:00 PM, Monday, June 24, 2019 at Grace Church 2731 Edgewood St. SW Roanoke, VA. 24015. Pastor Charlie Evans will officiate. Interment will follow at Evergreen Burial Park in Roanoke.

Flowers will be accepted or donations can be made to Grace Church, line itemed for missions. An online guestbook is available for family and friends by visiting

I remember Bill very well from 6th grade at Raleigh Court Elementary. I hadn't known him before that year, and didn't know him after really. But that year he made a big impression on our class of city kids. He was a country boy through and through and we didn't know what had hit us. He was sweet and kind and so very goofy! My most vivid memory of him is when he performed the entire song of "The Battle of New Orleans" for the class - complete with hand motions and side effects. I hope Bill kept that wonderful spirit throughout the rest of his life. I'm so sorry to hear of his passing.

I am so sorry to read about Bill's passing. Bill & Johnnie lived two doors from us on Thomason Road and I kept Bill when he was a tot and I was a teenager. The Mullins were really good neighbors. Wish they had not moved away because they were really good to all of us. If my parents had any kind of medical problems, Johnnie was there for them. My parents were Taylor and Edna Bowles and my name is Lynda. I was very happy to read about his relationship with Jesus Christ and his church attendance. My prayer is that the Lord will sustain you and the family during this difficult time.

Dear Becky,
You were a real trooper this year hanging in there and supporting your husband during his difficult medical challenges. You have been in my heart and prayers too as I prayed for Bill during all his medical needs. Our hope is in Christ, and He always provides. And Nehemiah encourages us: The joy of the Lord is our strength. May the Lord continue to bless you with His protection and provisions. Love in Christ, Lynn Davis in Star, Idaho.
