Obituary for Ruby O'dell Newsome
Ruby O’dell Newsome, 89, of Salem, passed into Heaven on Sunday, March 17, 2019.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Luther and Effie Elkins O’dell; her husband, Charles Newsome; a sister, Alma Byrd, and her stepson, Ron Newsome. Family left to cherish her memory include her brother-in-law, Garnett Byrd of Pulaski; and her cousins, Ruth Fielder of Troutville, Darlene Staples, Kathleen Smith and Carol Metz, all of Hiwassee.
Ruby’s gentle, kind and grateful spirit made her beloved by all who knew her, including her special friend, Kathy Lewis, and her many caretakers for whom she was so thankful at Salem Terrace Harrogate Healthcare Center; and her extraordinary, devoted Power of Attorney, Billy J. Seabolt, Esq.
Ruby was a dedicated Secretary/Administrative Assistant at Richfield Retirement Center in Salem for many years, and later felt privileged to serve as a bookkeeper for the local United Methodist District Office for years before retiring. She also served several years as a diligent Meals-on-Wheels Volunteer after her retirement. She was a long-time, faithful member of the Central United Methodist Church in Salem.
A memorial service will be held at 11AM, Saturday, March 23, 2019 at Central United Methodist Church 428 South College Avenue, Salem, VA 24153. Rev. Bryan Buckles will officiate. A fellowship luncheon will be provided afterward in the church fellowship hall. Interment at Sherwood Memorial Park will be private.
