Obituary

Lewis Victor Martin, Sr., 86, of Salem, Va. rose on heaven’s shore on Wednesday, May 29, 2019. He was born on Wednesday, March 29, 1933, in Oneonta, NY, to the late Jesse Erskine and Edith Julia Burke Martin. Lewis proudly served and retired after 20 years of service to the United States Air Force, as well as, 19 years of service with ADT. He was known for his great love for all people, but especially his love for God. He is a shining example of the love that God gives us through His Son Jesus Christ. He was known by many names; Father Lewis, Barracuda Buddy, Lewie, Dad, Grampa, Popie, Popsy Lopsy, Pop Pop, but most of all, friend. He was always willing to help. He is known for his ability to make you laugh and brighten your day, no matter what you were going through. There was nothing that he couldn’t fix. Lewis believed that America was the greatest country on earth. He is preceded in death by a son, Lewis Martin, Jr.; granddaughter, Rebekah Martin; sisters, Eva Mabie, Lena Wells, Loretta Shutters, and Harriet Degnan.
He is survived by his wife of 66 years, who was the love of his life, his Sweetie Pie, which he married on Saturday, December 12, 1953, Joyce Utter Martin; he is also survived by his daughters, Diana Thomas (Randall) and Joyce Creed (Randy); and his son, Pastor Douglas Martin (Kathy); grandchildren, Dennis Landry, Holly Landry Scott (Matthew), Bret Martin, Amanda Creed Imamovic (Mirsad); great-grandchildren, Bryanna, Aiyana, Issabelle, Zaccheo, and Ezekiel; daughter-in-law, Jan Martin who was married to Lewis Martin, Jr.; two sisters, Betty Utter and Jesse Gage. He dearly loved and enjoyed all his extended family too numerous to mention.
A celebration of his life will be held at 4:00 pm on Sunday, June 2, 2019, at the John M. Oakey & Son Funeral Home with Rev. David Keaton officiating.
Friends may visit with the family from 3:00 – 4:00 pm at the funeral home on Sunday.
The family wishes to give special thanks to Lewis’ caregivers; Angie, Allie, and Cathy.
Online condolences may be sent to the family at www.johnmoakey.com.

Lewis Martin was one of the most amazing people I’ve ever had the pleasure of knowing. I lived next to him and Joyce for a few years. He and I would have countless chats about everything from Jimmy Stewart to big band music, the weather, work,, and faith. He gave me a huge collection of big band music all on cassette tapes that I eventually transferred over to CD. When the Derecho hit Roanoke in 2012, he and I were out in the street moving downed tree branches and moving phone lines laying in the road. He was out there in his tee shirt and underwear with just a flashlight. No regard for his attire, or his own well being. Selflessly, he was worrying about everyone else and if they were okay. Over time, he insisted that I stopped calling him Mr. Martin and call him Lewie instead. I eventually moved out of state to Alabama and settled down. I miss my friend, and I love him dearly. I hope that in this lifetime, I’m able to be half the man he was. To Joyce, I’m beyond sorry for your loss. Thank you and Lewie for allowing me to be a part of your lives even if it was only for those few years. God bless you.
