Obituary

Larry Edward Quarles “Big Larry”, 73, of Roanoke, parked his rig one last time, on Thursday, July 4, 2019.

Larry was known for his loving heart and kindness. He was a life-long truck driver. Over the course of his career he received accreditations for traveling over two million miles accident-free. He loved talking on his C.B. radio and listening to the truck drivers’ communications when he wasn’t on the road himself. He also served in the United States Army during the Vietnam war where his love for trucking was created.

Larry is preceded in death by his parents, Ira Quarles and Donna Arnold; brother, Samuel Quarles Sr.; two sisters, Dorothy Quarles, and Mary Boothe; two daughters, Doris Sowers, and Tammy Stout.

Left to cherish his memory is his loving wife of 38 years, Peggy Quarles; seven children, Larry Jr., Donna, Robert, Tommy, Gary, Brenda, and Susan; and two sisters, Margaret Patterson, and Ellen Wright (Mike); 21 grandchildren, and 18 great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be held on Sunday, July 7, 2019, from 2-4:00 p.m. at John M. Oakey & Son Funeral Home 305 Roanoke Blvd. Salem, Va., 24153. A funeral service will be held on Monday, July 8, 2019, at 2:00 p.m. in the chapel of John M. Oakey & Son.

The family would like to thank the staff of Good Samaritan Hospice for all of their compassion and support, as well as the exceptional care they give Big Larry.

In Lieu of flowers, please make charitable contributions in his name to Good Samaritan Hospice 2408 Electric Rd, Roanoke, Va. 24018, 888-466-7809.

What can I possibly say that hasn’t been said... Uncle Larry you were always one of the sweetest, kindest men I’d ever known. You were a great dad to ALL your children and always full of smiles. I was blessed to have you as an uncle. I will love and miss you forever. RIP Uncle Larry❤️

I am glad you were in my life for almost 40 years as my step dad. Mom couldn't have found a better man in this world to bring into our lives & take care of us like you did. I will always cherish our memories of going to the Speedway every Saturday. I hope that one day, people will see me as at least half the man you were. I am so heartbroken over losing you but I know you are happy where you are now. I will forever miss & love you my other Dad. Love your Son, Gary.
