Obituary

Ira Clyde Deyerle, 78, of Salem, passed away surrounded by family on Monday, June 17, 2019. He was born on September 9, 1940 in Roanoke, Va. to the late Walter Elmer, Sr. and Eva Jeanette Rutherford Deyerle. Ira graduated from Andrew Lewis High School in the class of 1958. He later received his higher education from the University of Virginia where he became a diehard fan of the UVA Cavaliers sports program. He was a 50 plus year member with the Taylor Masonic lodge 23, located in Salem and retired from G.E. Electric Drive Systems after 30 plus years of dedicated service as a software engineer. He was a family genealogist and historian for the Deyerle Family Association. Ira loved walking along the beach as much as he loved the Blue Ridge Mountains. Above all, Ira will be remembered as a loving husband, father, grandfather, brother and friend to all who knew him. He will be missed!
In addition to his parents, Ira was preceded in death by his wife of 48 years, Judy Marie Coggins Deyerle; daughter, Eva Marie Deyerle; siblings, Walter Elmer Deyerle, Jr., Joyce Matchette, Faye Sechrist, and June Thomas Fisher.
Family remaining to cherish his memory includes his son, Russell Deyerle and wife, Stacy, and granddaughter Emily Nicole Deyerle of Henrico, Va.; sisters, LaVerne Deyerle, of Salem, Va., Sherrye May, of Abingdon, Va., and Patricia Turner, of Lynchburg, Va.; special friend Linda Koogler of Raphine, Va.; chosen daughter Mary Duffy of Earlysville, Va., and numerous beloved nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews, and in-laws.
The family will receive friends on Thursday, June 20, 2019 from 6 until 8 pm at the John M. Oakey and Son funeral home in Salem.
Funeral services to honor Ira’s life will be conducted at 11 a.m. on Friday, June 21, 2019 at the First United Methodist Church, 125 West Main St., Salem, Va., with Pastor Mike Houff officiating. Interment will follow in Sherwood Memorial Park. The church will host a luncheon following the funeral.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations can be made to Dr. Ryan Gentzler’s research at the Emily Couric Clinical Cancer Center at UVA and mailed to UVA Health Foundation, PO Box 800773, Charlottesville, VA 22908. Gifts may also be made online at https://giving.uvahealth.com.
Alternatively, Ira was dedicated to his granddaughter Emily’s education, so donations can also be made directly to the family for an educational fund.

I graduated with Ira from ALHS in l958, but did not really know him then. I know some of his distant relatives but never really knew him in high school. I got acquainted with Ira by being a VERY SMALL part of the 2008 50th Reunion planning committee and the 2013 55th reunion planning committee.. He was a very sweet person and when I told him I did not know him in high school, he laughed and said you would not have recognized me then anyway as I was only 5'6" tall when I graduated from ALHS and when I graduated from UVA I was 6'1". He was so nice and at the time of the Reunion planning he was giving dialysis to his wife at home on a daily basis. He always was very aware of the time when we were attending planning meetings and most of the time he had to leave before we were finished but he wanted to make sure that he was on time to start her dialysis treatments. He was a very devoted husband and caregiver and I really admired and respected him for being so loving to his wife. We kept in touch occasionally by e-mail and he sent me a cartoon last summer and when I responded to his e-mail asking him if a 2018 reunion was being planned, he said he was not sure as he was in the process of fighting cancer and would not be available to help even if he wanted to. I told him I would keep him in my prayers for a complete healing and to let me know how he was progressing. That was the last time I heard from him. I am so glad that after all those years I finally got to meet Ira and I regret that I did not know him in high school. Prayers and hugs go out to his family at this most difficult time. Sincerely, Alberta (Bertie)Henderson Mayes
