Obituary for Gene Grubitz III

Dr. Gene Grubitz III, retired associate professor of biology at Roanoke College, world traveler, expert fly fisherman, avid bird watcher, talented photographer, wonderful cook, and one having a skilled and perceptive wit, died on Monday, March 18, 2019.

Gene received his Bachelor of Science degree and Master of Science degree at the University of Oklahoma, and his Doctor of Philosophy from the University of Arkansas. In the 1960s, he published widely on the behavior of tree lizards and ground squirrels. He was recognized for his research in bioacoustics, involving undergraduate students in his work on mockingbird song. Gene loved creatures great and small. He loved life.

Gene was preceded in death by his father, Gene J. Grubitz; and mother, Billie Robinson.

His surviving family includes his wife of 32 years, Jean Grubitz; stepson, Nathan Kimmel; grandchildren, Cameron, Clarissa, Charlotte, and Cooper; loving stepmother, Jo Grubitz; brothers, Gary Grubitz and wife, Kelsey, and Scott Grubitz and wife, Robin; brothers-in-law, Russ Spangler and wife, Sarah, and Allen Spangler and wife, Tina; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Deepfelt appreciation is extended to the health care team at the Salem Fresenius Dialysis Center and especially to Robin, Loretta, Gina, and Michelle. The entire family and especially his wife, Gene, gained three extra years with this special man. Thanks, also, to Dr. Fletcher Matthews, Dr. Mark Taylor, and many others for their kindness and help.

A memorial service will be conducted at 5 p.m. on Tuesday, May 7, 2019, in the Antrim Chapel of the Roanoke College Campus with Rev. Paul Henrickson officiating. Family members and friends may visit immediately following.

In lieu of flowers, charitable contributions may be sent to the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn, the World Wildlife Fund, or the Nature Conservancy. Online condolences may be expressed at www.johnmoakey.com.
