Obituary for Ellen Agner Crotts

Ellen Oney Agner Crotts, 101, of Salem, passed away on Monday, May 20, 2019.

Ellen was born on June 27, 1917, in Salem, Va., to the late James Andrew Agner, Sr. and Fannie Hilda Vandegrift Agner.

She was a life member of Salem Baptist Church, and was associated for many years with the North American Mission Board, formerly the Home Mission Board of the Southern Baptist Convention.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 55 years, William Lloyd Crotts, Jr., their daughters, Susan Elaine Crotts and Patricia Crotts Hurt; son-in-law, Jim Hurt; and brothers, James Andrew Agner, Jr. and Webster V. Agner.

The large and loving family that mourns her passing includes grandchildren, Suzann Hurt and John Hurt; great-granddaughter, Kylie Lambert; step-great-grandchildren, Ty Smith, Dylan Smith, and Elaina Smith; and sisters-in-law, Martha Agner, Louise Gilbert, Doris Conner and husband, Edsel, Bonnie Hartsel and husband, Paul, Clara Oliver, and Lillie Crotts. In her final years, Ellen was loved and cared for by a host of special friends, nieces, nephews, and in-laws who enjoyed her quick wit and wonderful stories about family and growing up in Salem.

The family expresses sincere thanks to Larry and Linda Markham and Grover and Opal Nixon for their many years of support and friendship.

Family and friends may gather from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. on Thursday, May 23, 2019, at the John M. Oakey & Son Funeral Home in Salem. A funeral service will be conducted at 11 a.m. on Friday, May 24, 2019, in the funeral home’s chapel with Rev. Everett Kier officiating. Interment will follow at Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens.
